The nursery. The little sanctuary. The space away from all the noise to be still and enjoy. To enjoy baby toes, a baby nose, baby smells and naps. A place to just stop and savor…the baby.
Most of you won’t believe it, but this is our first proper nursery. I know! Four boys and finally on the last one, we do a nursery. Such are the seasons of life. Other babies have found us in temporary situations or in the middle of moving, this time I had my heart set on a nursery for this little guy. No really, it’s for the baby. (Secretly I guess it’s more for me, but he is lovin’ it too!) Early on in the pregnancy I got an issue of Baby Talk Magazine, and honestly I looked at it so much the pages fell out and I don’t know what issue it was. SOOOOO sorry! However, they were highlighting nurseries people had done themselves. And, that was it. I just knew, even if it was only a corner of my bedroom, this child would have a little beautiful space on a rockin’ what ya got budget all his own!
These decals from Etsy were kind of a starting point of inspiration.
I was also all about owls. I know he will probably look at pictures one day and ask me what was the deal with owls and all. (Remember those macrame owls that hung in your bathroom when you were little bitty? They had cool eyes and parts of them had fuzzy fringes and you may have taken them down secretly and played with them in your room without permission. Maybe I do, maybe I don’t just sayin’………….)
This little undertaking started with the mindset of “what can I shop my house for and reclaim for the nursery.” So, look out all, Momma’s on the hunt. I raided my husband’s home office. He had some cool orange and aqua stuff in there. We had picked up these picture frames at Target on clearance a while back for pennies…literally. Love the faux bois thing and it ties right in to the woodsie thing, since owls kind of live in the woods, sometimes, maybe?
(On a side note, Target is sooooooo wonderful. Thank you for making your cool stuff cheap enough for the average people to afford it.)
Tiny, prescious, new…doesn’t that just about some up a baby? Mmmmm. Love it. Love Littlest man.
I stole the lamp and the little circle mirrors from my husband’s office. The table is a Target clearance find that I did get specifically with the nursery in mind. Cheapo-5$. The bedding is Olli and Lime the billie collection, and some wonderful people all went together for our baby shower and gifted us with it. The “Gaven” art is also a gift from some super sweet creative people. This little guy was much loved before he ever made his appearance!
The crib is a Simmons. I believe it was the Venetian, but y’all that was our first little guy’s crib. He just turned nine. So, it’s been a while on the crib thing. But, it lasted through four little guys.
The mobile is a funny story. I was looking around in Cracker Barrel one day while we were waiting to eat, and these little owls were sitting on a clearance table for $.40 a piece. They are actually silverware holders. I guess you tuck your knife in fork in them to make it pretty? Kind of lost on me, the silverware doesn’t sit around looking pretty too long at my house. But, as a diy mobile, I think they are just great. And, the price was right. Plus, he loves looking at those crazy things. Each one is just a tiny bit different.
The Chair.
The Chair, it makes me smile. This was another one of those things that we never got with the other three little ones. I scoured Craig’s List and thrift stores trying to find a really good deal on a chair. Then, my husband spotted this one on Google images and we then found it for a great price on Amazon. I waited and waited, and could not bring myself to order it. Then, I had a little opportunity come my way that paid me the exact amount I needed for the chair, and I knew the time was right. So, we ordered it off Amazon. I love it and it will transition great out of the nursery into some other part of the house down the road. The little pillow was Mimi’s creation! Love it. She should totally start an Etsy shop don’t ya think?
Ahhh, the dresser that everyone thought we were crazy for buying almost ten years ago. I’m so glad we did. It has worked great as a changing table and dresser combined for all the guys. The bookshelf in the corner is something my dad found on the curb ready to be trashed. I love that thing. On it are some of my favorite children’s collection books and an anthology of mine from a Children’s Lit class in college along with some little treasures we had laying around.
Turquoise shelves from Target clearance.
Little brushy owl-Target
The “G”–Hobby Lobby $.99 and spray painted white
“Owly” book–Mine from when I was a little girl and a proud member of the Weekly Reader Book Club (Thanks Mom and Dad!)
Baby Ben clock–one we have had forever
Baby shoes Cullan wore when he was teeniny
The “Gaven” needlework from a sweet lady at church
Photograph from these amazing people at Life Verse Design–I won it on a blog giveaway over at Nesting Place! Soooo exciting.
Metal modern owl art–cracker barrel clearance
Little white owl-actually a Christmas ornament from Target
And that covers the shelf and goodies….
The little table was my husband’s grandmothers, the owl lamp came from Cracker Barrel clearance. I walked in there one day and they were giving away all their owl things, huge score. I got everything owly there at the same time. And the decal over the door is one of my favorites. It came free, Yes I said FREE, with the trees I got. I need to paint a sweet little saying in the bubble. Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe, “Whoooo loves you?”
And that’s it ya’ll.
Our Rockin’ What Ya Got nursery. I sat down and totalled it up because I know some of you appreciate those details, and fifty bucks (that includes the paint from Ace that I forgot to mention). That’s all we spent to put together Littlest Man’s castle. Amazing. Hope you’re inspired to work with items you may have around and make a space you will treasure to be in with your family.
Now I am linking this much awaited post up with Thrifty Decor Chick because it just so happens it is Show Us Your Kids Space over there this month. I am sure you’ll be inspired.
