Father’s Day

18 Jun

Happy Day to you.  Hope you had an awesome time celebrating your Daddy’s day.

We made this simple, and I mean simple (cause I did it all by myself so you know it has to be pretty easy!) collage out of silhouettes for my husband/father to my four boys.

We were able to make it entirely from stuff we had on hand—another prerequisite for me to actually accomplish a craft project.  With my teaching background, time has helped me accumulate quite a few little craft supplies.  So, take heart, if you’re just starting out, over time you’ll have multiple paints, glues and doo-dads to make this and that for your kiddos or those you love.

So, I’ve had in my head and randomly on the many lists I make to make silhouettes of our guys.  I love the classic antiquey kind of look they have.  Plus, the black and white thing.  That’s a plus.  And then, We Are That Family showed how easy it could be, so I was sold.

Since Kristen does such a great job at the tutorial, there is no need for me to reinvent the wheel.  Check hers out.  I did the exact same things.  The only difference is, from iphoto I printed my pictures in 3×5 size instead of 8×10 because I wanted mine to be smaller for a collage frame.

The frame actually came from good will almost two years ago.  It was a natural wood color, and it had pictures of Pan Am planes in it from the eighties?  Go figure!  Anyways, I politely took those out and spray painted it black.  And two bucks later, had a nice collage frame waiting for my little silhouettes.  Then it sat in the corner for a few months, until yesterday!

The boys loved being able to help with this little project.  They posed well.  Even baby!

See what I mean!  It did take a few shots to get something not so blurry, but it doesn’t have to be perfect.  You’re just going to cut it out and flip it over to paint it.

Did I mention, you might need to be a little patient?

But, it really pays off.  Cause look!  I was so pleased.  I teared up a little.  Really, I did.

Believe me when I say, if I can do this, you can too!  Happy silhouetting!  This was probably one of the most rewarding small scale, affordable craft projects I have ever done.  Love.

If you decide you’re inspired, please come on back and let me see your handiwork, and your sweet little ones profiles!

Green Living Part Two: Pic A Flowee

24 May

The younger members of our clan refer to any divine blossom as a flowee.  I think it started with our first and just stuck.  However, for this post, I’ll try to act my age.  I said I’d try.  No promises.

Flowers and Photography.  One of my favorites.  Flowers, Children and Photography, my Absolute Favorite! My camera has a special setting on it just for closeups of flowers.  I tend to use that setting a good bit, but learning how to take good ones in manual mode is definitely a goal many of us shoot for.  Pioneer Woman has some great tips for that here, and here, and here.  The lady just speaks plain English.  I love it.  This post will give you some inspiration to get out there and shoot.

The Pioneer Woman

See what I mean!

And if you are super serious about your pics, check out Kent Weakley’s e-classes.  You could learn how to shoot this.  I again offer my disclosure.  I am no where near what you might call good at photography.  But, I keep trying.  Maybe I’ll get there one day.  My husband takes great shots.  He’s just got the eye.  So, if you see any good ones here, chances are pretty good that he took them!

Today, I thought we would highlight some of my favs.  Here we go!

Picture Takin’

14 Mar

Tuesday’s Sweet Shot over at Life with My 3 Boybarians has me thinking a lot about photography.  I love pictures.  Always, always have.  I poured over them as a child, obsessed over cameras and on and on.  I don’t want to bore you with the details.  But, to be brutally honest with myself and you……  I’m not such a great picture taker.  There, I said it.  It’s out and I feel sooooo much better.  I want to be, and I get lucky with a really good one every now and them, but  I struggle.  It’s quite frustrating.  I can spend 30 minutes trying to get a good shot, and certain people I’m related to (like my husband) can pick up my camera and click, the first time…the perfect shot.  “HOW’D YOU DO THAT???”

So, I’ve been doing some homework on the subject.  I think it’s like most skills, a journey of learning experiences.  But learning from others always helps.

One of the first things I noticed about Pioneer Woman’s blog were her pictures.  They were amazing!

I mean, look at this egg!

She even makes pouring confectioner’s sugar look interesting!

Obviously, she has learned some things about photography.  I am reading up on it.  You should check it out.  I love the way she puts it in language I can understand.  I have read a few photography blogs and honestly, I’m usually lost a few sentences in.

She calls it What the Heck is an Aperture and there are four parts to it.  Read them all.  They are so good, and hopefully you’ll see things (at least in the picture category) getting better around here!

Happy Picture Takin’!
