Monday’s Upcycle: Spoon Wreath

8 Apr

IMG_1495

So it would seem that I’m all about the plastic ware these days.  First here, now this.

But, this.

This is the best wreath for a buck I’ve seen.  I hope you like it too.

Here’s all you need and how I made mine.

Plastic spoons. (I got mine at Dollar Tree and they came 48 in a pack…I used 46)

Hot glue/gun

10ish minutes….great project to do with kids.  Mine helped.

That’s it.

I played around with the positioning for just a second before I committed with the glue.

Then, I added a dot of glue here…

IMG_1481And a dot of glue here…

IMG_1483Then just 45 more to go.

Almost there…

IMG_1485And that’s it.  I did pause at some spots and held it in place just to let it dry if it seemed to be separating.

Lovely.  Like the laurel wreaths the Greeks love.

I was first inspired to do this about two years ago when I saw this.

Here’s another example of some with colored spoons.

06d06035b11b57a8_camille5I think this upcycle proves anyone can have a pretty wreath even on a tight budget.

Spring Mantle and Wreath

15 Mar

IMG_1075

It’s the end of the week already!  Wow.

And here we go…as promised, winter is stored away and spring has sprung to the mantle.  I tried to get lots of pics for this post for ya!  Aren’t ya proud of me?

This is a Rockin’ What Ya Got wreath because all the materials used were on hand from other projects and the wreath itself was a $.99 thrift find.  Thanks ChristinaIt was so fun thrifting with you last year….wish you lived closer.

And here’s how she came together…

IMG_1040I took a bit of burlap ribbon I had on hand,

IMG_1052 and this fabric…. and I used this idea to make a flower of sorts. IMG_1058 Instead of sewing, I opted to hot glue the whole thing together because I would like it to be easily removed so I can recycle the wreath for another season.

I wrapped a bit of jute on the upper right hand side of it, placed a few speckled eggs and the raffia that they came with….

And, Voila!  That’s it.

And the wreath, in its place on the mantle.

Home Maker

22 Feb

Home Maker.

So much in a title.

Titles can identify us.  Not a bad thing.  But, do they identify who we are?

No.  I say not.

Christ does that.

But, in our culture titles mean a lot.  The title of homemaker means many different things to many different people.  It’s on any application you fill out.  Health insurance, life insurance, loan applications, irs forms…you name it.  They want a title.

Some people even get quite outspoken about it.  “I’m a domestic diva, goddess…etc.  Never a homemaker.”  (You’d think it sounds homely or something….hee, hee.  Sorry, I have four children, I get little sleep.)

Then there is that image that comes to mind of big fluffy robes, unkempt pony tails, and bunny slippers smelling of last nights tater tots and fish sticks….I’m just sayin’–we’ve all seen that image in one place or  another (maybe on tv, maybe in the mirror…..).  Is that why we shy away from that term?  Label?  Title?  For fear of being associated with unproductive, lazy-ish, bon-bon eater, soap opera watcher?

I suggest a reclaiming.  A reformation!  (I know I’m being terribly dramatic….maybe I’ll edit this out, maybe not.)

Home. Maker.  Not as easy as it sounds.

There is an art to making a heap of two by fours, drywall and asphalt shingles into a home.  It takes real work.  Inspiration and creativity.

Enter.  Darlene and Fieldstone Hill Design.

Believe it or not, I have entertained the thought of quitting this blog more than once in the past year.  With thoughts of, “This is a silly waste of time.  This stuff has no eternal significance…and on and on.”  And while there may be a great deal of truth to that if I let it be that, this blog means something different to me, my family and I hope you….

Darlene completely hits the nail on the head with this….

Our homes: used to build up workers, servers, friends, and families. Our homes that can serve if used toward that aim. Our homes CAN serve if we don’t hold on too tightly. If we keep our homes in perspective. If our homes work for us and for God…. not the other way around: us, striving and serving and working for our homes.

Her Design Manifesto, and maybe now yours?

I love things that create and help maintain perspective.  Biblical perspective.  I feel like this, the Design Manifesto, is a true find.  One to keep in front of us.  So, we'll do just that.  When you see this...

You'll know, it's a reminder to me and to you to keep all things in perspective.

To keep Christ first in each and every thing.

And, to bring Him glory in everything.

I leave you with the lyrics to a song by Steven Curtis Chapman...

Do everything you do to the glory of the One who made you

Cause He made you

to do every little thing that you do to bring a smile to His face

And tell the story of grace

With every move that you make

And every little thing you do .....
